Orange County Mayor Teresa Jacobs Proclaims November 27-December 3 STEM Week

November 27, 2011. Orlando, Fla.  Team Orlando announced today that Orange County Mayor Teresa Jacobs has signed a proclamation declaring November 27 through December 3 is “STEM Week” in Orange County.  STEM stands for Science, Engineering, Math and Science and for Central Florida, the push for STEM takes on an equally important focus, given the area is widely recognized as the nation’s center of excellence for modeling, simulation and training.

STEM Week coincides with the Interservice/Industry Training, Simulation and Education Conference (I/ITSEC).  I/ITSEC annually fills the Orange County Convention Center with over 20,000 registrants and serves as a prime opportunity for hands-on STEM demonstrations and motivation for young people.

“We are grateful to Orange County Mayor Jacobs, Commissioner Boyd and the Orange County Commissioners for their work in creating an atmosphere where business and entrepreneurship can support STEM efforts, stated Steve Goldberg, Army Research Institute and Team Orlando STEM Coordinator.  “We are also grateful for the many business and education partners that mean success to Orlando and Orange County STEM initiatives.”

“In working closely with Mayor Jacob’s office, we share the good news: a call to action across Central Florida, and the Nation, to invigorate the K-20 STEM curriculum, to enhance the teaching skills of science and mathematics teachers, to increase interest and active participation of students in STEM activities, projects, academics and, eventually pursue STEM career opportunities,” stated Kent Gritton, Director, JTIEC. “Central Florida is a National and International center of excellence for Modeling & Simulation and Medical technology in support of industry, academic, and government organizations. STEM education is essential to the maintenance, enhancement, and growth of the technological underpinnings of the Modeling & Simulation and Medical industry of Central Florida.”

Commissioner Scott Boyd will present the signed Proclamation at a special ceremony on Wednesday afternoon during the VIP Reception (at I/ITSEC) to Team Orlando in recognition of the Team Orlando Board of Directors’ active STEM participation in the community.

About I/ITSEC

Proclaiming a STEM week in Orange County, particularly during the week of I/ITSEC, is a unique way for Central Florida to open their eyes a little wider and formally show STEM support.  I/ITSEC encourages the Central Florida community to actively participate in the conference via many opportunities: student tours, International Pavilion, Future Leaders, America’s Teachers and the 6th annual Serious Games Showcase & Challenge (SGS&C).  In-depth information about these events and programs can be found at: www.iitsec.org.
