Orlando becomes testing ground for Luminar’s global manufacturing operations (by Alex Soderstrom)

For years, Luminar Technologies Inc.’s Palo Alto, California office was identified as its headquarters, but co-founder Jason Eichenholz says Luminar was always a Florida company.

The biggest facility operated by the maker of lidar sensors for autonomous vehicles is in Orlando, where Luminar employs the majority of its 750 workers. In fact, Orlando is becoming an even more critical part of Luminar’s mission to make self-driving cars a practical and accessible part of travel.

Luminar (Nasdaq: LAZR) is developing the manufacturing process for its Iris sensors in Orlando, Eichenholz, the firm’s chief technology officer, told Orlando Business Journal. The process and institutional knowledge developed from the production line in Central Florida will be replicated by Luminar’s manufacturing partners around the world to scale up production of the sensors.
