Administrative Lead for Simulation and Technology – The University of Michigan, School of Nursing (UMSN)
BASIC FUNCTION AND RESPONSIBILITY
The University of Michigan, School of Nursing (UMSN) Clinical Learning Center (CLC) is seeking an Administrative Lead for Simulation and Technology who is responsible for facilitating and supporting the educational offerings of the center and who will report to the co-Faculty Leads. The CLC provides unparalleled learning resources for nursing students. From a Skills Lab for honing basic skills to a state of the art, high fidelity mannequins that replicate real medical situations, this environment enables students to apply their in- depth knowledge of nursing theory in a safe and supportive environment. The CLC is currently comprised of seven main areas: Nursing Skills Lab, Physical Assessment Lab, Standardized Patient Rooms, Anatomy Lab, Simulation Rooms, Control Room, and a Debriefing Rooms. In this role, the Administrative Lead will act as both a supervisor and operations manager and a simulation technician for a complex technological center with high interface with UMSN faculty and students. S/he will report to the Undergraduate and Graduate Faculty Leads and be responsible for assisting with coordinating all technical support and supervising operational aspects of the CLC. The Lead will work with the CLC undergraduate and graduate faculty leads and others as needed for operations, including Information Technology, Finance, Human Resources, and Facilities departments. Additionally, the Administrative Lead will work with faculty and staff on scheduling and planning simulation, standardized patient, and other learning activities, ensure equipment is maintained and available when needed and supplies and materials are available for scheduled simulation work. The ideal candidate will have expertise and knowledge of higher educational technologies, strong background in personnel management, outstanding communication and teamwork skills, experience in inventory management, staffing analysis and supervision of technical personnel.
CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Equipment and Technology:
- Understand the use and value of equipment utilized in the CLC. This includes the mannequins, task trainers, Anatomage table, video systems, etc.
- Train technicians, as required, on equipment operations and maintenance.
- Program equipment. Operate and instruct technicians and others on the ENS system, CLC databases and programmable equipment.
- Interface with equipment manufacturers as needed regarding equipment troubleshooting and system

- Research vendors for supplies and equipment, obtain bids, and manage warranties and purchases in conjunction with other administrative offices.
- Provide feedback to the co-faculty leads from faculty and technicians concerning acceptability of facilities and
- Understand the inspection, prevention, maintenance and operation of different simulator technologies ranging from anatomic models, task trainers, full body patient simulators, surgical simulators and new simulation technology introduced to program.
- Demonstrate and teach technical aspects of operating simulators to interns, faculty facilitators and others.
- Function as a simulation technician when needed.
- Operate and maintain all CLC simulation equipment, including conducting routine equipment maintenance and inventory updates.

- Monitor equipment performance in conjunction with technical personnel.
- Assure preventive and corrective maintenance of equipment according to manufacturers’
- Work with manufacturers or vendors to correct equipment deficiencies in order to minimize down
- Act as a point-of-contact with equipment manufacturers for trouble-shooting equipment and systems
- Assure facility, equipment, instrumentation and supplies are organized and set-up for teaching/skills lab sessions as required, including post-session clean up.
- Supervise technicians and support staff, ensuring that all work meets deadlines and standards for quality and Assist with hiring and competency evaluation of simulation technicians, and provide technology related orientation/training for new staff as needed and as requested by the co-Faculty Leads. Assist the co-Faculty Leads in overseeing the development of simulation technicians as needed.
- Plan, assign and review the work of staff to ensure that group objectives are met, including goals to provide equity.
- Support the CLC co-faculty leads and team to achieve established standards for simulation and standardized patient activities.
- Provide tours of the simulation lab, providing technological demonstration of equipment as requested.
- Assist with reporting functions, such as class attendance, equipment usage, equipment repair and maintenance. Provide guidance and information to faculty, staff, students and visitors concerning the policies and functions of the simulation center as requested.
- Utilize computer software for schedules, training sessions, classes, workshops, and other activities as requested.
- Coach and develop technical staff in the CLC so that absences or vacancies do not idle the simulation

Inventory and Scheduling:
- Order necessary supplies and consumable
- Assist the co-faculty leads in working with faculty to determine supplies and equipment needed for new
- Assure a system to schedule all necessary simulation work for undergraduate, graduate and research needs.
- Development and implement inventory practices to ensure that levels are maintained in a cost effective way.
- Assist in managing the equipment and inventory budget as requested and work with the finance team to assess course
- Assist in tracking operational expenses to support monthly and annual operational reports and long-term plan
- Assist with identification of need for replacement equipment, instrumentation, and supplies and obtains cost estimates from vendors/suppliers as requested to facilitate new purchases in coordination with the co-Faculty Leads and the finance

Education and Experience:
- Five (5) or more years of experience with high fidelity simulation equipment and task trainers or experience in a clinical healthcare setting (e.g., EMT, Anesthesia technician, ORT, etc.).
- A Bachelor of Science degree or various relevant coursework, or the equivalent combination of education, training and experience from which comparable skills can be attained is
- Five (5) or more years of supervisory experience in a clinical healthcare setting, including workload prioritization and balancing, and management of staff.
- Demonstrated ability to organize and supervise technical staff, while reliably managing responsibilities and manage time effectively, including scheduling and planning, and follow-up.
- Must have very strong interpersonal/customer service skills and organizational skills, and the ability to work effectively with diverse groups.
- Ability to learn new technologies quickly, including equipment found in healthcare settings, computerized simulation equipment and video-recording equipment.
- Demonstrated knowledge of the features and capabilities of basic multimedia equipment, including video equipment.
- Background in computer use, set-up, troubleshooting, and maintenance Some proficiency with databases, digital audio-visual editing, ability to learn new technologies quickly and easily. Experience with setting up audio-visual equipment.
- Demonstrated experience in the use of Microsoft Office products (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Outlook), Win2000, XP, Windows 7, Mac OS, and other types of databases.
- Candidate must have excellent communication skills, with the ability to receive and convey information clearly and concisely for various mediums including strong oral, presentation skills and written communications skills.
