The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline - 1-800-273-TALK (8255) - is a 24-hour, toll-free, confidential suicide prevention hotline available to anyone in suicidal crisis or emotional distress.  By dialing 1-800-273-TALK, the call is routed to the nearest crisis center in our national network of more than 150 crisis centers.  The Lifeline’s national network of local crisis centers, provide crisis counseling and mental health referrals day and night.  The Lifeline is administered by Link2Health Solutions, Inc. (L2Hs), a wholly owned subsidiary of the Mental Health Association of New York City.  Lifeline’s grant is funded by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA).

Valencia Wins 2011 Aspen Prize for Focus on College Completion, Job Preparation

Valencia College learned today that it won the inaugural Aspen Prize for Community College Excellence.  Announced in a ceremony held at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C., the award comes with $600,000 in prize money.  In a competitive year-long process, the Aspen Institute, along with a panel of some of the biggest names in higher education, selected Valencia and four runners-up from a preliminary list of 120 “top” community colleges in the nation, based on student performance and graduation data collected by the U.S. Department of Education.  “Valencia College has proven that devotion to assessment yields results,” said Josh Wyner, executive director of the Aspen Institute’s College Excellence Program.  “The college is an engine for employment in Central Florida, and a model for the country.”

Navy League Central Florida Council Recognizes 101 Year Old Pearl Harbor Survivor, 7 Dec 2011

On the 70th Anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor, the Central Florida Navy League Council recognized Floyd "Pete" Petiprin, a 41 year U.S. Navy Veteran and survivor of the savage and unprovoked attack.  Petiprin is 101 years old and also a survivor of World War I and a number of battles at sea.
