Systems are being designed, built, and maintained that are more complex than ever before. Few people would argue with this, but it is likely that no two people would define complexity the same way. This tutorial addresses such questions as what makes a complex system complex, how is systems engineering adapting to better manage complex programs and systems, what methodologies and processes are being adapted and updated, and why such adaptation is mandatory.
Sarah Sheard, an INCOSE fellow, finishing a PhD in Complex Systems Engineering at the Stevens Institute of Technology, will discuss causes and effects of complexity, and the types of complexity that manifest in projects, systems, the environment, and the mental abilities of the people. She will give a brief overview of the scientific background of complexity, both historical and recent, and then address how systems engineering relates to complexity.
Sarah will show how SE and INCOSE have typically dealt with complexity in the past, and what will change in systems engineering in the future. As part of this, she will show the small-set of complexity measurements that are included in her dissertation research on complexity measurement.
