DEI - Kratos - Component Engineer

Position Description

Responsible for directing and overseeing component engineering, including but not limited to the practice of selection, approval/qualification, documentation, and management of all purchased components and direct material utilized to produce an electronic or mechanical assembly or end product. Possess in-depth knowledge and experience in process design, manufacturing, and engineering principles and practices, product and test engineering, failure analyses and reliability engineering.  Many also have backgrounds in board/system-level design and/or test.

Provide guidance and direction to all programs relative to component selection in support of corporate objectives. Interface horizontally with Business Operations, Contracts, Program Management, Manufacturing, and Logistics management on a peer level to establish technical priorities, set interdepartmental expectations, and ensure all program requirements are properly identified, addressed and met.


Support Director of Engineering in implementation of standard reporting processes that provides mechanisms for evaluating all technical products in a like manner.  This includes setting standards and identifying metrics that are common across all programs, and provide information for evaluating design trends across the company.

Education Required

  • BS in Engineering or Science field related to system design and development.
  • MS in technical, engineering or management to compliment BS degree desired.

Experience Required

  • Skills commensurate with proven successful execution of the above stated job functions.
  • Adept in Engineering, Manufacturing and Logistics principles and practices within the DoD’s Defense Acquisition Framework

Desired Skills/Experience

  • DoD Acquisition experience as an engineer or manager on a major DoD developmental program.

Principle Duties

  • Maintains the Preferred Parts List (PPL)
    • Establishes standard titles for components
    • Maintains current descriptions to the standard format.
    • Flags obsolete parts.
    • Consolidates duplicate parts and reduces inventory.
    • Selects alternate sources of supply.
    • Approves all changes, additions, deletions.
  • Constructs standardized descriptions for all new parts. 
  • Reviews all requests for new components to assure that a current part can satisfy the requirements.
  • Establishes and maintains a specification system for off-the-shelf parts.
  • Assists design engineers in the selection of parts that best fit their requirements.
  • Value engineering (cost reduction.
  • Maintains component library.
  • Participates in design reviews for the purpose of component selection and standardization.
  • Assist with the reliability prediction (e.g.. MTBF) of the board level and requesting the reliability information of component from manufacturers if required.
  • Prepares procedures for Incoming Q.A. when they do not seem to have a level capability for sophisticated component testing.
  • Cost Analysis for components used and selected for new programs.
  • Component End of Life (EOL), Availability, Lead-time and Pricing.
     

More Information

TRAVEL:
Occasional visits and trips to customer sites not usually more than once per quarter,for a couple of days. Local travel to subcontractors and trade shows required.


SUPERVISES (POSITIONS):
Supervise Component Engineers in subordinate positions , as required.
Demonstrated leadership experience managing small groups (2-5 persons) with multi-disciplinary skills and tasking.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Smoke free environment, standard office setting
  • Sits for long periods of time in front of computer
  • Moves around between facilities and around the shop floors, may require standing on feet for extended periods
